Warning Signs

What Is A Dental Emergency?

Generally, we define a dental emergency as any oral condition causing you pain or discomfort that you cannot treat on your own. Damaged, cracked, and loose teeth are all considered emergencies. However, serious tooth infections and toothaches also qualify. If past dental work such as a crown or filling has become loose or fallen out, this is an emergency that requires immediate treatment. As a rule, it’s better to be safe than sorry! And with a quick phone call, our team can help you determine what’s an emergency, when you should come in, and how to treat at home until you can be seen by our dentists. Call right away if you think you’re experiencing an emergency.

How Can I Protect My Mouth?

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

First, call Smile Pro Studio to let us know that you will be coming in for an appointment. Immediate care is critical for preserving damaged teeth. If your tooth has been knocked out, or if a crown or filling has fallen out, recover your tooth or dental work and bring it to your appointment. In the case of a knocked-out tooth, put it back in the socket after rinsing it gently with warm water, or put it in a small container of cold milk or your own saliva. Treat bleeding with clean cotton balls or sterile gauze. Manage pain with over-the-counter NSAIDs like acetaminophen or ibuprofen, but don’t use aspirin since it can interfere with blood clotting. Once you’ve treated bleeding and pain, come to Smile Pro Studio for professional care.

Optimal Outcomes

THe Importance of Immediate Care

If you are experiencing oral pain, it won’t go away on its own! Waiting to seek professional treatment for an oral health issue will only lead to more complicated problems. If you come in right away, we can often save your tooth from worsening conditions. For example, getting root canal therapy is much less invasive and more affordable than replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant. Getting immediate care will ensure the best outcome for your damaged tooth and your overall health.

don't Wait in Pain

Toothaches Are Dental Emergencies

Whether your toothache is a dull pain or more severe and radiating throughout your jaw, you shouldn’t wait to get treatment. Time is of the essence when it comes to dental emergencies, and toothaches are included! Many patients will mistakenly think that their toothache isn’t a cause for a same-day dental appointment, but this simply isn’t the case. A toothache can be a sign of an infection or another, more serious dental issue, and should always be addressed right away. Call today to schedule an appointment at (847) 437-3533,

Be Prepared

Common Dental Emergencies

Though many dental emergencies are obvious, such as a knocked-out tooth or excessive bleeding, this isn’t always the case. For example, a persistent toothache can also be considered a dental emergency. Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, and a toothache is often a sign of an infection or a large cavity that must be treated as soon as possible. To ensure the best outcome for your oral and overall health, call Smile Pro Studio at the first sign of a dental emergency. You can reach our team at (847) 437-3533.

Treating

Toothaches

Persistent toothaches are considered a dental emergency. If your toothache doesn’t go away within 2-3 days, this indicates that you may have a cavity or an infected tooth. Look for discoloration in the affected tooth or around the gum, and symptoms like sensitivity to heat, cold, and pressure. You should get emergency help right away for a serious toothache to prevent further discomfort and ensure your condition does not progress. If left untreated, a toothache will always get worse and you may end up losing your tooth.

Get Help

For Bleeding Gums, Lips & More

If your gums are bleeding for no apparent reason, you may have an advanced case of gum disease, which requires immediate treatment. Oral trauma to the lips, tongue and gums also may require emergency care if you do not stop bleeding within 1-2 hours. At Smile Pro Studio, we offer periodontal care for gum disease and we can also treat lacerations with stitches. If you notice excessive bleeding, call us immediately to get the care you need.

Repair

Broken & Damaged Teeth

Even seemingly minor damage to your teeth, such as a small chip or crack, may increase your risk of complications like tooth decay or infection. Minor damage to your teeth can be repaired with dental bonding, while broken and deeply-cracked teeth may require the use of a dental crown to cover up the damaged enamel and restore the tooth. If you break a tooth due to an oral injury, accidentally biting a non-food object or for any other reason, contact the team at Smile Pro Studio right away for an emergency appointment.

Replace

Knocked Out Teeth

If you have a tooth knocked out of your mouth, contact Smile Pro Studio right away for emergency care. To save your tooth, our team will need to re-insert and splint your tooth in its socket within 1-2 hours. If your tooth is left outside of your mouth for longer, the root will die and we won’t be able to re-implant it. Follow these steps if you have a knocked-out tooth:

  • Once your tooth is knocked out, recover it by picking it up from the crown (top), not the root (bottom)
  • Rinse it gently with warm water, if necessary
  • Re-insert it into the socket or put it in a small baggie of cold milk to keep it moist. This will keep the root alive until the tooth can be reimplanted
  • Then, come to our office as soon as you possibly can to have the tooth splinted

Restore

Missing Dental Work

Although pulling out a filling, crown, or other dental work may not seem all that urgent, it exposes your weakened enamel to oral bacteria and acid. You may quickly develop a cavity or tooth infection if you don’t get treatment right away. If you pull out a piece of dental work, schedule an emergency appointment at Smile Pro Studio immediately. We may be able to reattach your pulled-out dental work, so bring it into the office for your appointment in a plastic baggie. When you arrive at our office, Dr. Zomorrodian will determine if your dental work can be reattached, or if it must be replaced.
